10 signs you are a wuxia fan: Do you agree?

Wuxia is a genre often overlooked because of pre-conceived notions against it, but what most do not know is that this unconventional genre is as diverse as it gets. In fact, historical dramas are beginning to shine in recent years, garnering attention from younger fans and leaning more mainstream.

It doesn’t matter that you didn’t like wuxia before, once a convert, always a fan. Case in point, I recently met an 80-something-year-old grandpa following every episode of Romance of the Condor Heroes on Hunan TV. Uhh, me too!

#1. You consider Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jacky Chan and Donnie Yen legends because they are.

Just watch any of their movies and you’d have to agree that they’ve got mad skills.

#2. You always wonder how homing pigeons manage to function like a cellphone until you realize that it’s impossible.

Trained pigeons can go from point A to point B but there’s no way they can fly the ends of the earth just to deliver a message to a person in the middle of nowhere.

#3. Your favorite authors include Jin Yong and Gu Long.

It also means that you have seen the Condor Heroes more than once given the number of adaptations over the years. After all, the more the merrier.

#4. You are no stranger to supernatural feats like flying, an amplified sense of hearing, palm to palm energy transfer and the like.

As someone in the know, you understand that an energy transfer can save a life but it requires absolute concentration. No distractions allowed, not even a nudge.

#5. You no longer find it weird that a woman can fool everyone into thinking that she is a man simply by cross-dressing as the opposite gender.

Apparently, people back in the day had a warped sense of perception but once you let the hair down, yep, he's a she.

#6. You know that a person who is poisoned can only be cured by another poison that is equally deadly.

Or at least that’s what you learned from TV.

#7. Your idea of an acupoint is on a whole other level. One point can render a person immobile.

It’s possible, right?!?

#8. You know for a fact that anyone who falls off a cliff will never die.

Even better if said person chances upon a cave with ancient martial arts scrolls; then voila, a kung fu master emerges.

#9. If you don’t speak Chinese, the first Chinese words in your vocabulary include but are not limited to wuxia, wulin, jiang hu and shi fu.

Yet whatever the nationality or ethnicity, surely you must have imagined becoming a martial arts hero at some point.

#10. You have heard of Justice Bao.

Wang Chao, Ma Han, Zhang Long, Zhao Hu, weiiii wuuuu… it sounds like a spell of some sort but it’s not.

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo coming soon

Lee Joon Ki and IU in Scarlet Heart Ryeo

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo 보보경심: 려 is the 2016 k-drama adaptation of the popular c-novel by Tong Hua, which made waves across Asia due to the 2011 Chinese drama starring Nicky Wu and Liu Shi Shi.

Beneath the political power plays and time-travel is a captivating story about love where reigning k-pop idol IU takes the lead as the charming and intelligent heroine with Lee Joon Ki as her valiant prince.

Lee Joon Ki's delicate features earned him the nickname minam aka beautiful man and there's more handsomeness to go around with Kang Haneul and a string of pretty boys joining the mix to complete the remaining princes of Goryeo. It is literally a feast for the eyes, but Scarlet Heart carries a great story requiring great acting so I really hope the cast delivers.

Kim Kyu-tae who is also behind the success of That Winter, the Wind Blows takes the helm as PD and the drama will be produced in its entirety prior to airing. Given the record-breaking success of another pre-produced drama called Descendants of the Sun as well as the craziness around Korea's live-shoot system, I say amen to that.

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo is slated for a simultaneous release in Korea and China on Aug 29, 2016. I have no clue whether the k-version can ever come close to the former but naysayer or not, I simply cannot wait!

Demon Girl airing now

Demon Girl is a fantasy cdrama starring Zhang Zhe Han and Li Yi Tong

Pictures can truly paint a thousand words as I stare supremely intrigued over Demon Girl 半妖倾城 without any inkling of the plot whatsoever. It is a fantasy novel-turned-drama adaptation by Yu Zheng and his works have always been hit or miss, but if the pictures are any indication...

Demon Girl is headlined by rising star Zhang Zhe Han (Legend of Banshu) and newcomer Li Yi Tong who are supported by a largely unfamiliar cast of young artists (born 1990s), a gamble in and of itself but not a bad thing.

Viann Zhang Xinyu and Ady An guest star to portray the earlier generation, detailing the story of how the demon came to be during the late Qing Dynasty while popular Taiwanese actor Jiro Wang is shown in costume as well.

Set in the Republican era, the main story will center around a love triangle and an ill-fated love between a half-demon and a rich man. It is a myriad of cliches and even time periods since the latest trailer unveils a modern-day setting, yet hot mess or not, I kind of want to watch it. The series premieres Jun 30, 2016 on Mango TV and LeTV.

All About Ice Fantasy: premieres Jul 24

Feng Shao Feng in 2016 fantaxy wuxia called Ice Fantasy
Judging by the stills alone, it's hard to get anymore fantastical than Ice Fantasy 幻城, a Chinese xianxia telling the tale of a mythological era when the Ice and Fire tribes were embroiled in a long-standing war.

It is adapted from a novel of the same name written by Guo Jingming 郭敬明 who was only 20 when the popular novel was published in 2003.

The series stars Feng Shao Feng (Lan Ling Wang), Victoria Song, Ma Tianyu and Zhang Meng and the production seems to be going big on aesthetics by hiring Hollywood bigwigs such as Dan Hennah who won an Oscar for Lord of the Rings and I have to say that the sprawling sceneries look visually stunning, especially when endowed with a beautiful-looking cast to begin with.

The elven ears remind me of the Legend of the Nine Tails Fox if not a direct replica of LOTR. It is Feng Shao Feng's second attempt at producing and it has been an expensive affair with over 3 hundred million spent, 300 actors, 30,000 extras, thousands of costumes and mounds of manmade ice.

Even the likes of Korean actress Kim Hee Sun joins the cast as the Ice Queen but I'm most excited for Victoria Song having been a fan of her since f(x). I wonder if all the hype is enough for the series to garner attention in Korea as well or whether it will stay one-sided where Koreans cross over to c-dramas but not the other way around?

The series premieres Jul 2016 on LeTV and Hunan TV. Check out eng subs on Viki.
