Border Town Prodigal

Border Town Prodigal 边城浪子 is the second part of the Little Li Flying Dagger series, Gu Long's signature piece with the last being the Legend of Flying Daggers.

Filming for Border Town Prodigal wrapped last September and it is slated for a 2016 premiere. Finally, an wuxia adaptation that I haven't seen before and I'm super excited because it is part of the Flying Daggers series.

Zhu Yi Long (New Xiao Shi Yi Lang) plays Fu Hong Xue, a man who grows up along the borders towns and travels to Mainland in search for his father's killer.

Viann Zhang Xinyu (Song of Phoenix) is the most beautiful woman in the martial arts world and from the stills alone, I concur 100%. She has a regal beauty that can change from vulnerable to fierce and the acting chops to match. Anyone else think that she might be a good choice as Dong Fang Bu Bai?

Familiar veterans like Vincent Ziao En Jun and Qiu Xin Zhi, both of which were regularly cast as the protagonist of wuxia dramas back in the day also join the cast as supporting characters. I mean Vincent Ziao En Jun is practically the Xiao Li Feidao (Little Li Flying Dagger) himself.

First Look: God of War Zhao Yun

Oh God of War Zhao Yun 武神趙子龍, if you only knew how inclined I was to like you. Hint: SNSD's Girls and Peace Concert... I was there, but Yoona or no Yoona, you turned out to be such a tease.

SNSD Im Yoona in God of War Zhao Yun, a Chinese historical wuxia

Episode 1 begins with a standard voice over so often used in period dramas to introduce the era. The Han dynasty has reached the end of its life and the king commands Zhao An (Yu Rong Guang) and Li Quan (Zou Zhao Long) to protect the Qing Gang Sword and the Heavenly Sword.

Hungry for power, Dong Zhuo seizes control of the capital while his subordinate Lu Bu (Godfrey Gao) thwarts any attempts against him. His first order of business as king is to reclaim the legendary swords in hopes of bringing legitimacy to his throne.

Back in Zhao An's hometown, his son Zhao Zi Long (Lin Gengxin) enjoys a day of poems and playful conversation with friends.

One of them gets captured by Dong Zhuo's men and a fight breaks out, leading to the double suicide of Zi Long's parents accompanied by some cringeworthy dialogue along the lines of "Nooo, I'm not leaving you... thud." Thus commences Zhao Zi Long's fateful journey to become an iron masked hero, thanks to the show's fetish for ugly masks.

Lin Gengxin in God of War Zhao Yun, a Chinese historical wuxia

Yu Rong Guang in God of War Zhao Yun, a Chinese historical wuxia
First Impressions: God of War Zhao Yun retains the qualities of an old school wuxia from the cake face makeup akin to Chinese opera to the flying action scenes and the quintessential young apprentice who embodies all that is just and noble. However, rather than euphoric nostalgia, comes an unexpected disappointment.

Maybe the budget was used up on casting, after all, it must cost an arm and a leg to bring together Im Yoona, Lin Gengxin, Gu Li Na Zha and Godfrey Gao, what more when adding veteran martial artists Yu Rong Guang and Zou Zhao Long to the mix.

Unfortunately, the prettiness does not excuse the poorly edited scenes that look like a photoshop job gone wrong. For anyone who has seen City of Devastating Love, the CGI tiger makes a comeback, albeit unwarranted.

Lin Gengxin in God of War Zhao Yun, a Chinese historical wuxia

Costumes are a hit or miss inasmuch as Gu Li Na Zha is stunning in ancient garb, Godfrey Gao dons a glorious mess of red, gold and purple topped with a little fur ball.

There are also odd-looking masks, plastic props that don't belong and crazy color combinations that scream for attention, which is weird for me to say because I love this genre and its clothes. Lin Gengxin's white robe above, that's classic wuxia.

Godfrey Gao in God of War Zhao Yun, a Chinese historical wuxia

For what it's worth, my incessant nitpicking seems overly superficial and even though I didn't like the over-the-top acting nor did I connect with the characters, the story of the Three Kingdoms is one that is so complex, engaging and riveting that is too tempting to miss.

The drama is doing really well ratings-wise, which is no surprise given the hype. Nirvana in Fire didn't do as well but word of its awesomeness traveled far and wide so only time will tell whether God of War fares otherwise. In case you were wondering, Yoona appears on episode 2. Eng subs available in Viki.

Wong Fei Hung (2017)

Wong Fei Hung is a Chinese historical drama starring Ryan Zheng and Haden Kuo

Wong Fei Hung is a Chinese folk hero widely recognized in pop culture because of Tsui Hark's Once Upon A Time franchise starring Jet Li. It has become a film synonymous to the martial arts genre and an icon in HK cinema that even the first few beats of the theme song can ignite serious bouts of nostalgia.

A drama version 国士无双黄飞鸿 is currently filming in Hengdian World Studios and it will star Ryan Zheng and Haden Kuo. I have never heard of either of them before so I'll simply judge the book by its cover to say that at the very least, they seem to have it down in the looks department.

Ryan Zheng stars in the titular role of Wong Fei Hung who starts out a simple man with simple ideals. Adhering to his father's teachings, he vows to protect the people that he cares about and soon realizes that his passion extends to the people of China.

Taiwanese-American Haden Kuo stars as Thirteenth Aunt and her Eurasian look resembles that of Rosamund Kwan from the earlier Jet Li films. Thirteenth Aunt is investigating her father's death yet she becomes conflicted when all clues lead back to Wong Fei Hung. But come on, he can't possibly be the culprit.

Wu Li Peng who shot to fame as the Third Prince from Legend of Zhen Huan is also cast as Bucktooth So, making for a very dapper bucktooth.

Wong Fei Hung is a bold attempt to adapt a classic film and sorry for being Debbie Downer but I just hope it doesn't suck. Expected release date is in 2017.

First Look: The Three Heroes and Five Gallants

Wang Chao, Ma Han, Zhang Long, Zhao Hu 王朝馬漢張龍趙虎. It's been ages since I last heard those names.

If you like the venerable Justice Bao and the many martial arts heroes that help in his unyielding stance against crime, there is no reason why you won't enjoy The Three Heroes and Five Gallants 五鼠闹东京.

ep 1 scene from popular cdrama Three Heroes and Five Gallants starring Yan Kuan

Episode 1 begins with an ambush that turns into a police raid once Zhan Zhao (Kevin Yan Kuan) joins the fray and Justice Bao's team triumphantly captures the perpetrators.

In an attempt to fight back, Pang Tai Shi and his daughter Consort Fei request for Zhan Zhao's presence in the palace but their feeble attempts to charge him of treason falls flat at every instance.

Ultimately, the evil pair settles for backhanded insults ill-advising the emperor to give Zhan Zhao the title of Imperial Cat, a move that will certainly do more harm than good since it is a direct challenge to the legendary Five Mice of Hollow Island.

First Impressions: Three Heroes and Five Gallants brings forth a bout of nostalgia reminiscent of the warm fuzzies that I used to get from watching the long-running Taiwanese series Justice Bao.

Even though the first episode barely had much dialogue and the writing fraught with one-dimensional characters whose motivations are clear as day, the heart of the Justice Bao series and the like has always been its overarching mantra that justice shall prevail.

From the moment Kevin Yan Kuan as Zhan Zhao descends from the sky, the drama spends a good fifteen minutes on non-stop action that's flashy and filled with a nonsensical humor that is so cheesy, yet I'm loving it.

Chen Xiao makes his comeback as Bai Yutang, the handsome Fifth Mice who also happens to be full of himself. There are plenty frame by frame close-ups of the actor and I'll just sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Jokes aside, the first couple episodes were mostly for entertainment's sake and the tireless banter among the Five Mice a fairly enjoyable affair. It has potential but seriously not much to offer in terms of substance at this point. I really hope to see some interesting cases down the line so that it can live up to its name as a detective wuxia.

Last but not the least, I'm glad to see a feistier heroine in Zheng Shuang and not her doom-and-gloom character in Chronicle of Life that has become too melodramatic for me to continue on.

First Look: New Xiao Shi Yi Lang (2016)

Re-watching Nicky Wu's Xiao Shi Yi Lang was a mistake because now that New Xiao Shi Yi Lang 新萧十一郎 is out, it falls flat in comparison, which is a pity considering I was most interested in this one out of the many dramas airing this February.

Feng Si Niang in ep1 of martial arts cdrama New Xiao Shi Yi Lang

Episode 1 opens with a scene where Feng Si Niang, Xiao Shi Yi Lang's closest friend and partner-in-crime, aptly fends off her attackers that it's hard to tell who is bullying who. A one-armed swordsman swoops in to kill all the men in sight, apparently out of mercy because they would have fared worse in the hands of Si Niang. He also divulges that Xiao Shi Yi Lang (Kevin Yan Kuan) was the culprit responsible for his missing arm.

Kevin Yan Kuan in ep1 of martial arts cdrama New Xiao Shi Yi Lang

Cut to Xiao Shi Yi Lang in the midst of a robbery to steal a royal crown for Si Niang's 30th birthday. He succeeds rather effortlessly despite announcing his arrival beforehand and the two friends reunite afterwards for a a night of revelry and drinking.

The following morning, Xiao Shi Yi Lang and Si Niang set their sights on the legendary Deer Carver Sabre that is guarded by the Shen Household. The stealthy pair make it all the way, only to have a run in with Shen Bijun (Gan Ting Ting) who is desperate to escape her engagement with Lian Chengbi. Consequently, the episode ends with a brawl on all fronts as the three are caught in the act.

Zhu Yi Long in ep1 of martial arts cdrama New Xiao Shi Yi Lang
Gan Ting Ting in ep1 of martial arts cdrama New Xiao Shi Yi Lang
First impressions: New Xiao Shi Yi Lang promises a different twist that is a welcome change because I'd rather they leave the classic untouched to come up with something else altogether. The recent adaptation delivers in that respect showing a grander and darker Xiao Shi Yi Lang. The good don't seem that noble and the bad much worse, chock-full of throat slashing scenes that is miles apart from the wholesome 2002 version.

There are a number of storyline changes as well, which leaves me more curious than anything else. That's about all the praises that I can sing because the rest on my list is just a whole lot of complaints.

Xiao Shi Yi Lang looks considerably older than Lian Chengbi and it's odd to envision them as rivals given their disparate appearances.

Gan TIng Ting as Shen Bijun is the most beautiful woman in the martial arts world with features so stunning that it's repeatedly acknowledged in the series. Even though Gan Ting Ting is pretty, it is still a bold claim to make and I find that she and the actress who plays Feng Si Niang bear such a close resemblance so to say who's prettier is highly debatable.

Personally, my vote goes to Xiao Gong Zi played by Zhang Han Yun (Lan Ling Wang Fei). She is smart, cute, certainly diabolic but very intriguing and she is the drama's saving grace, if it ever needed one.

Zhang Han Yun in ep4 of New Xiao Shi Yi Lang, a Chinese wuxi
I was surprised that Shen Bijun can spar almost on par with Lian Chengbi at the end of episode 1. Unfortunately, her newfound skills might have been for convenience's sake since it effects a cooler action sequence. And as expected, Bijun relegates back to the perpetual damsel in distress in subsequent episodes.

Behind Shen Bijun's prim and proper facade is someone condescending, superficial and stuck-up, always turning her nose up at Xiao only to need his saving later. I wonder why they bothered to give her martial arts skills. Is it to stay faithful to the novel? Because Bijun's strength is in her passion and quiet resolve, and clearly not her ability to defend herself so a fighting Bijun that is kidnapped time and again makes her not the brightest bulb on the porch.

Throwing in a couple shot for good measure because I made it to the episode where the leads start warming up to each other. Too bad I'm on the verge of giving up at this point.

Remembering Xiao Shi Yi Lang 2002

Because the upcoming adaptation had me itching for more, I re-watched the 2002 version of Xiao Shi Yi Lang 蕭十一郎 starring Nicky Wu (Legend of Zu), Athena Chu and Yu Bo. Without further ado, below are the memorable scenes that turned this TV series into a classic. Warning: spoilers ahead.

Xiao Shi Yi Lang (Nicky Wu) and Shen Bi Jun's (Athena Chu) love story began after an accidental meeting when the happy-go-lucky bandit Xiao Shi Yi Lang crashes through the roof on his way to steal the Deer Carver Sabre (Ge Lu Dao). Even though Xiao Shi Yi Lang succeeds, he decides to return the legendary sabre that will be used as Bi Jun's dowry when she marries Lian Cheng Bi.

Multiple kidnappings attempts later and the two have developed strong feelings for each other as Shi Yi Lang happens to save Bi Jun time and again. Despite having second thoughts, Bi Jun ultimately carries on with the wedding for the sake of the Shen family.

What ensues is a series of misunderstandings exacerbated by a constantly suspicious Lian Cheng Bi (Yu Bo) who is determined not to be made a fool. Beneath his kind and gentlemanly exterior is actually a perceptive yet distrustful man whose lack of faith in Bi Jun causes their relationship to wither from the very start.

wedding scene ep4 Xiao Shi Yi Lang 萧十一郎 2002

Because of his mission as the protector of the Deer Carver Sabre, circumstances keep bringing Xiao Shi Yi Lang and Bi Jun together whilst her relationship with husband Liang Cheng Bi is pulled further apart. When the three were trapped in Xiao Yao Hou's territory, Bi Jun selflessly stepped forward to save Xiao Shi Yi Lang in spite of Lian Cheng Bi's warning that her actions will ruin their marriage.

scene from ep 10 Xiao Shi Yi Lang 2002 starring Nicky Wu and Athena Chu

Yet the series is not without its flaws, thanks to a meddlesome Lao Lao, a prejudiced Tai Jun (Bi Jun's grandma) and even a quasi-intelligent Bi Jun who is often deceived into hurting Xiao Shi Yi Lang. One such instance is when she stabs him with a sword after believing that he conspired with Xiao Yao Hou to capture Bi Jun's grandma.

At times, the plot contrivance can be as silly as Bi Jun rushing in between two men in the midst of a fight so that the highly-skilled martial artist Xiao Shi Yi Lang can end up injured, effecting a much more dramatic scene.

ep15 Xiao Shi Yi Lang 2002 starring Athena Chu and Nicky Wu

Feng Si Niang and Yang Kai Tai's story is quite well-developed despite being on the sidelines. Love triangles are painful enough and for Si Niang to be the fourth leg of that triangle would have been overkill so I'm glad that as the series progresses, Si Niang slowly gets over her childhood friend Xiao Shi Yi Lang and finds purpose in helping Yang Kai Tai recover from the loss of his father.

Scene from ep19 Xiao Shi Yi Lang aka the Eleventh Son 2002

The second half of the series is when Lian Cheng Bi completely turns to the dark side creating innumerable problems for the good guys. Enraged over losing Bi Jun, he is pushed over the edge after overhearing that Tai Jun coaxed Bi Jun into marrying him despite Bi Jun's pleas to call it off.

While I don't disagree that Tai Jun should bear the brunt of the blame, a diabolic Cheng Bi exacts his revenge in the most despicable way possible. He offers the oblivious grandma a cup of tea that will cause her to lose reason and kill people every night, knowing that the only solution will be for Xiao Shi Yi Lang to become the bad guy by cutting off Tai Jun's head.

Ep23 from Xiao Shi Yi Lang (Tai Jun poisoned by Liang Cheng Bi)

Half a year passes and Xiao Shi Yi Lang returns with a pregnant lady named Bing Bing who is actually Cheng Bi's sister Lian Cheng Jin. However, the two go through great lengths to hide Cheng Jin's identity, puzzling even her uncles Bai Yang and Lu Liu.

Sure enough, Lian Cheng Bi had to confirm his sister's identity so that he can finish the deed to kill her. Although his second attempt remained unsuccessful, Lian Cheng Bi's identity as the big bad clad in red is revealed.

Ep32 XIao Shi Yi Lang returns with Bing Bing
Ep32 XIao Shi Yi Lang returns with Bing Bing
I can't end the posting without talking about the interactions between Xiao Shi Yi Lang and the masked man. Their dialogues while short are fraught with humor bringing out a pleasant father-son dynamic, which is a much-needed balance to the drama in Xiao Shi Yi Lang's love life.

At least one thing in his life is going well given that Xiao Shi Yi Lang always had the masked man to look out for him, and not a stupid person who can be easily manipulated to stab him in the back or anywhere else because that has happened one too many times.

The much-awaited reveal happens towards the latter part of the series when the masked Er Guo Tou finally pulls out the Deer Carver Sabre proving that he is none other than Xiao Shi Yi Lang's long-lost father. On a sidenote, I find it hard to believe that Xiao Shi Yi Lang couldn't recognize his father's face. It's not like he was that young when they were separated?

Scene from Xiao Shi Yi Lang 2002 ep 37 (masked man's identity revealed)

Hands down one of the most exciting battles in the entire series occurs in the last episode when Xiao Shi Yi Lang walks into an ambush of epic proportions where he gets backstabbed by not one but two of his close friends and has to face a multitude of assassins.

Having been misinformed about Bi Jun's death, Xiao Shi Yi Lang still fought down to his last breath determined to take down as many people with him amidst the thrashing of swords. Fortunately, Bi Jun arrives in the nick of time to save Xiao for his final showdown with Lian Cheng Bi.

The Three Heroes and Five Gallants

Three Heroes and Five Gallants 2016 wuxia starring Kevin Yan Kuan and Chen Xiao

Set in the Song Dynasty, The Three Heroes and Five Gallants 五鼠闹东京 is a detective wuxia centering around one of the heroes Zhan Zhao against the Five Gallants aka five heroic mice. It is adapted from a Qing Dynasty novel written by Shi Yu Kun, which inspired a more well-known version titled Seven Heroes and Five Gallants, a novel that has been remade into film many times before.

I honestly don't know why I continue to drop pop cultural references but I can't help but see it a la Batman v Superman or even a metaphorical Tom and Jerry, wuxia style. Kevin Yan Kuan (New Xiao Shi Yi Lang) and Chen Xiao (Romance of the Condor Heroes) in the lead roles of Zhan Zhao vs Bai Yu Tang is to watch for because it's so rare for the viewers and the production team to unanimously agree on casting choices and in this instance, it was so on point.

As an imperial guard, the righteous Zhan Zhao is somewhat of a straight arrow compared to the mischievous Bai Yu Tang. While both are polar opposites in every sense, they are undisputedly heroes in their own right. Yet the fangirl in me can't resist the deviant charms of the latter and with Chen Xiao as the actor (>.< happiness).

The ending song is mildly reminiscent of a 90's theme song and it's called Bu Ru Huai Nian 不如怀念 by Chen Chu Sheng 陈楚生.

New Xiao Shi Yi Lang (2016)

New Xiao Shi Yi Lang 2016 wuxia drama adapted from Gu Long's novel starring Yan Kuan

Ranked # 4 in my top 20 period dramas, New Xiao Shi Yi Lang 新萧十一郎 is adapted from Gu Long's novel called The Eleventh Son, which is about a thief who has earned the name Great Bandit Xiao Shi Yi Lang. Through a series of events, he falls in love with Shen Bi Jun, a woman engaged to another.

The series stars Kevin Yan Kuan and Gan Ting Ting and premieres on Feb 9. I'm ecstatic for this one because I couldn't get enough when it came out thirteen years ago. A part of me still wishes Nicky Wu could have reprised his role as Xiao Shi Yi Lang. After all, he's still super popular, right? I'm also a bit skeptical whether anyone can ever surpass Nicky Wu's version of the character but fingers crossed that it'll be just as good.

This latest adaptation is supposedly unlike any of its predecessors because it will push the boundaries in depicting Xiao Shi Yi Lang as the atypical hero - no longer the noble thief but a misfit who does as he pleases.
