First Look: Demon Girl

Producer Yu Zheng's track record for ruining novel adaptations did not bode well for his latest offering but in spite of it, Demon Girl 半妖倾城 manages to turn the tide, at least in my book.

Ady An guest stars in Demon Girl

Episode 1 begins with a rundown of the laws governing the fantasy universe of demons roaming the earth. They are said to be no different from humans except for increased strength, agility and the ability to fly.

A family of four is running for their lives while the mother (Ady An) bids her husband and two daughters farewell as she closes the doors behind them to transform into a dark winged creature powerful enough to fight an army of militants.

Years pass and Nie Qing Cheng (Li Yi Tong), the elder sibling, makes a living as a dancer in a posh nightclub. During a performance, she is forcibly taken by gangsters in an attempt to bribe Ming Xia (Zhang Zhe Han), the new sheriff in town.

Ming Xia makes it clear that a rich man like him has no need for money or women and that he became a sheriff to rid injustices like this. Guns are drawn and Ming Xia emerges the victor after outmaneuvering the gang lord in his very own territory.

At home, Qing Cheng recalls her fleeting encounter with Ming Xia. Her sister Qing Xin's playful teasing result in a fun game of splash that causes a crack in the tub without either of them realizing that it is due to Qing Cheng's powers.

ep1 of Demon Girl, a chinese fantasy drama
Qing Xin is a student at a high society school and she is devastated over being excluded from the biggest event of the year. Acting as the loving big sis, Qing Cheng sneaks them inside and stands up to her sister's bullies, allowing the more timid Qing Xin a chance to shine.

Seeing that her work is done, Qing Cheng takes a walk and she is pleasantly surprised at the sight of Ming Xia.

First Impressions: I was intrigued before the drama even aired despite serious doubts on whether it would hold my interest at all; yet lo and behold, it has been four episodes and I'm antsy for more.

Brushing aside Mi Re's awkward shower scene, powder-faced vampiric goth and bad hair plus the undying trend of pointy ears, this drama is relatively well-made because if Yu Zheng has a penchant for anything, it would be his talent for pretty pictures, which work wonders in a supernatural realm where he has free reign to be as creative as can be.

From the flashy gold specks that tread a fine line between tacky and cool to the bits of information inserted at the beginning of each episode, Demon Girl adds nice details and retains a magical demeanor reminiscent of Monster Killer but this time around, romance takes the center stage.

It tells a love story that's not sickly sweet but sugary syrup in a way that leaves you wanting. Newcomer Li Yi Tong may not be the best actress but she brings to life a strong, lovable and unique female character that is easy on the eyes while the boys Zhang Zhe Han and Mi Re are equally swoon-worthy.

Episode 1 is so happy that it's practically a given for things to go awry; yet the conflicts that ensued while seemingly taken out of pages of a high-school drama ended up quite entertaining nonetheless.

Help! What could this drama be?

I'm trying to find the drama that I watched back in early 2000s (around the same time as Madame White Snake I think). This is a period drama but not with the Kings/ queens, just sword fighters or whatever you call them. And I remember there being a lot of scenes in the snow and the mountains. I only remember the ending.. So this girl has been poisoned and the only cure was by eating this fruit ( the plant produces only one fruit every seven years) and this plant has to be watered with alcohol. This girl is on a hideout in the snow mountains with her lover). So the day comes nearer for the fruit to be fully ripe but some old friends (I think) come visit them. While they were chatting, this girl who came with the visitors saw the plant in the garden and thought it was wilting so she watered it with water.. And it died. Thus, the poisoned girl cannot get her cure and she died in her lover's arms. What could this drama be??? - Junggyuks

Answer: Is it Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountains? Above is the opening scene though I don't remember any poisoned fruit in that drama.

Any kind soul who knows, comment below... your help is much appreciated:)

Seige in Fog

Siege in Fog starring Elvis Han Dong Jun and Sun Yi

Siege in Fog 迷雾围城 starts out mired in controversy as author Fei Wo Suo Si 匪我思存, who also wrote Chronicle of Life sues the production for breaching a 5-year contract that ended March 2016.

In their defense, the producers claim that a substantial investment has already been made since December of last year with no objections from Fei Wo Suo Si and for her to suddenly demand an extravagant sum is unfair and unwarranted.

Not sure what will happen here but stills are out for Siege in Fog, which is a romance drama starring Elvis Han and Sun YiElvis Han has been getting major exposure since Monster Killer with the potential to become the next big star thanks to his smoking physique and onscreen charisma and I swear, I don't ogle every single time but he seriously looks mighty fine in a suit.

Seige in Fog will revolve around a love-hate relationship between its leads where the protagonist is a cut below the average immature male by forcing his love interest into a marriage she never wanted.

To make matters worse, lies of epic proportions are uncovered, putting the married couple at odds with each other. Already, it sounds like Chronicle of Life in a Republican setting, no thank you.

Advisors Alliance (2017)

Advisors Alliance 军师联盟 is a 2017 Chinese historical drama starring Wu Xiu Bo, Liu Tao (Nirvana in Fire), Janine Zhang (Empress of China), Li Chen, Zhang Zhixi (Three Heroes and Five Gallants), Tang Yixin (Legend of the QIng Qiu Fox) and more.

The plot revolves around esteemed strategist Si Ma Yi and his time in Wei during the Three Kingdoms. Veteran Wu Xiu Bo double hats as actor and producer and his attachment to the project brings together the star-studded ensemble of acting heavyweights, creating much anticipation from fans.

God of War Zhao Yun's attempt at the Three Kingdoms turned out to be such a letdown, which I hope Advisors Alliance does not repeat.

As war-ridden and bloody as it may be, Three Kingdoms remains one of the most marvelous clash of wits amongst the brilliant minds in Chinese history and Advisors Alliance certainly looks to deliver a legit depiction of the same, though I have no clue why the characters are in suits, must be a new concept that they're trying out.
